How to: Create a folder or directory in Windows

It is a good idea to know the basics about how to store files on your computer. With the birth of file sharing application you can download a large number of files in a few hours on a high speed connection. So it is a good idea to known the basics about how to store files on your computer.


A folder, also called a directory, helps organize your files. Files can be :a digital picture, a scanned picture, a memo you've written, an excel spreadsheet or basically anything you've saved on your computer.

For example, you might want to create a place or folder on your computer to store digital pictures you took while on an outing. You could call the folder "Pictures at Mom and Dads April 2004"

How do you create a folder?
Follow these directions:

1. Go to the area where you want to create a folder. For example, if you want to put the new folder inside the My Pictures folder, then first open My Pictures Folder

2. Click File on the menu, then click New.

3. Click Folder. A new, unnamed folder icon will appear - the text will be highlighted ready to rename.

4. Type the name you want to give your folder.

Note: To change the name of a folder simple point to the file - right click and select "Rename"
